Home Repair Essentials Workshop Series (1–2 Hour Micro-Modules)
Suggested Donation Range:

Module 1 – Drywall Installation Basics (Pilot Training)

Duration: 2 hours
Skill Level: Beginner
Focus: Learn the fundamentals of hanging drywall properly.
Includes:

  • Proper measuring & cutting
  • Stud spacing & panel positioning
  • Fastener patterns
  • Installing around outlets/windows
  • Hands-on install of a practice panel

Outcome: Participants complete a small wall mock-up.

Module 3 – Basic Tile Installation (Floors & Walls)

Duration: 2 hours
Includes:

  • Subfloor prep
  • Backer board install
  • Tile layout patterns
  • Cutting (manual cutter)
  • Thinset application
  • Grout & sealing

Outcome: Install a 2' x 2' backsplash or floor section.

Module 5 – basic plumbing repairs

Duration: 2 hours
Includes:

  • Replacing P-traps
  • Unclogging drains
  • Fixing running toilets
  • Replacing supply lines
  • Changing faucets & shutoff valves
    Hands-On: Build a mini PVC sink-trap assembly.
Module 7 – painting: walls, trim & touch-ups

Duration: 1.5 hours
Includes:

  • Prep work (tape, patch, sand, prime)
  • Roller vs. brush techniques
  • Cutting-in techniques
  • Matching paint colors
  • Fixing peeling/uneven areas

Outcome: Paint a sample section using professional techniques.

Module 9 – carpentry basics & household repairs

Duration: 1.5 hours
Includes:

  • Using tape measure, level, square
  • Repairing baseboards & trim
  • Fixing loose handrails
  • Installing shelves
  • Replacing door hardware
Module 11 – weatherization & energy efficiency repairs

Duration: 1 hour
Includes:

  • Window sealing
  • Outlet foam protection
  • Door sweeps
  • Attic insulation basics
  • DIY energy reduction tips
Module 2 – Drywall Finishing & Repair Techniques (Pilot Training)

Duration: 2 hours
Focus: Professional finishing methods used by contractors.
Includes:

  • Taping seams
  • Applying joint compound
  • Corner bead installation
  • Sanding (smooth finish)
  • Patch repair: holes, dents, cracks
  • Texture blending (orange peel, knockdown)

Outcome: Receive a CCB Drywall Repair Card (pre-apprenticeship prerequisite credit).

Module 4 – caulking & sealing for Kitchens/Baths

Duration: 1 hour
Includes:

  • Identifying mold/mildew
  • Types of caulk
  • Proper bead techniques
  • Tub, sink & backsplash waterproofing
  • Recaulking demo + hands-on work

Outcome: Master a clean, professional caulk line.

Module 6 – electrical basics (Non-Live training)

Duration: 2 hours
Includes:

  • Power safety
  • Changing outlets & switches
  • Replacing light fixtures
  • Reading simple circuit diagrams
  • Identifying breakers

Outcome: Complete safe mock wiring exercises.

Module 8 – flooring basics (Vinyl, laminate & floating floors)

Duration: 2 hours
Includes:

  • Subfloor evaluation
  • Underlayment types
  • Cutting + snapping boards
  • Expansion spacing
  • Common installation mistakes

Outcome: Install 6–8 rows of laminate planks.

Module 10 – door repair: alignment, hinges & locksets

Duration: 1.5 hours
Includes:

  • Fixing sticking or uneven doors
  • Rehanging doors
  • Replacing doorknobs & locks
  • Weatherstrip installation
  • Repairing frame cracks
Module 12 – intro to home safety & maintenance

Duration: 1 hour
Includes:

  • Smoke/CO detector installation
  • Fire safety basics
  • Water shutoff knowledge
  • Seasonal home maintenance checklist
  • Emergency repair planning
